The great tree hunt....

 I love a good deal when there’s one to be had, who doesn’t?   A couple of days ago my mom sent me a message letting me know that some fruit trees were on clearance at Lowe’s Home Improvement.  After doing some quick research and a discussion with my friend who has a very green-thumb, I decided that buying inexpensive trees right now would be a good idea.  In a matter of hours the girls and I were on the hunt for fruit trees!  Our first stop resulted in 3 brown turkey fig trees, 1 red delicious apple tree, and 3 Asian pear trees.  $96.00 for 7 trees - not too bad! 






We took our trees home, including a visit to the Chick Fil A drive through, and placed them around the back porch.  I figure they’ve been through their first tropical storm now as they experienced winds at 55mph in the bed of my truck, haha! 

We are currently living in our friends vacation home in a large neighborhood.  Thankfully there aren’t really any neighbors behind us so no one should question our growing jungle of fruit trees.  

Yesterday we went back out and hit up a couple more Lowes, A Home Depot and a couple Walmart.  Only one Lowes had their trees on clearance so we picked up 2 more apple trees, and 3 peach trees for $60.00  it’s strange the differences between stores and their pricing schedule, and none of the employees have any idea when it will happen at their store so we will just have to keep checking.  One Walmart had theirs on clearance but the pots were mislabeled as to what tree type was in each pot and I didn’t want to take a guess since google was being of no help on leaf identification.  Now that I think back on it I should have used my nature identification app (iNaturalist) and maybe it would have been more helpful.  Oops! 





We will leave the trees in their pots until about March when we will plant them along the outside perimeter of our property. Hopefully over the coming weeks I will find even more trees at great prices!

Culvert....

To date this has been one of the easiest experiences in this whole process! Last week we were out at the property and a SC DOT Truck had stopped on the road to work on a sign. The builder had told us that in NC the DOT puts the culvert drain pipe in when one is needed. I asked the SC DOT workers if that was an option here and they said absolutely! They gave me the number to their shop to call and request the pipe.  I called on the way home and spoke to a man who took my info and said they’d be out to check it out soon. Monday morning I received a call that he was at the property and wanted to confirm some things with me. Today - Thursday - a week after my initial call, they were out there with their machines, trucks, and multiple men and they had it all installed!  A welcome sight when I came around the curve today! Plats and earth moving...

This afternoon we went to the surveyor’s office and signed our names on the new the plat - there’s more to this story, and I will share when I am able 😉  Andy then took off immediately for the land as the mini excavator was calling his name, loudly!  A few hours later the girls and I headed out to see all he had accomplished.  The land is 38 miles from where we are living currently and takes about 45-50 minutes to get there.   Andy had pushed quite a bit of the top layer of the field (corn and weeds) into large piles and started burning it.  From one side looking toward the woods. The woods are ours too.  (Andy’s friend’s truck for those who may wonder how our GMC changed to a Chevy 😉) From the rear corner looking toward the road. Our house will be in front of where the fire is.  The neighbor’s dog came to visit today! She’s super sweet and enjoyed following the girls all over the field and playing fetch.
