The backstory.....
Our story begins in 2005....
Andy and I met while both taking part in a mutual friend’s wedding in northern Indiana. Life moved quickly after that, at least for awhile. Princess A was born, we moved to South Carolina, we both started new jobs (I stayed with CVS in the pharmacy and Andy was an electrical foreman for a commercial electrical company), we built a house (moving again!) and we got married - all in the first 3 years! Things calmed down for awhile after that. Smidge came along 6 years later and completed our family. A couple of years later I quit my pharmacy job to stay home and homeschool the girls, a decision I will never regret. Somewhere in there Andy changed jobs to become the electrician at a local hospital, a welcome move from the backbreaking and hot outdoor construction work.
For many years we dreamed of moving to the country. We wanted chickens, small farm animals, a huge garden and quiet. The more people filled up our once empty neighborhood, the more we knew we weren’t destined for subdivision life. It didn’t help that I was on the first homeowner run HOA board for our little neighborhood. In a list of the top 5 worst decisions I’ve made in my life, that one ranks high.
So we sold our house. During covid.
There was a lot of stress and uncertainty that came about after selling our house. We were in the process of buying a 1947 farm house which fell through the day before we closed on our house, essentially leaving us homeless. I have a wonderful friend who offered her family’s vacation home to us while we figured out what our next steps would be. We will forever be grateful for their immense generosity as it’s been the only “sure” thing in this whole house ordeal.
After a few failed offers on houses and land, we looked at some property in the middle of nowhere, inland South Carolina. Just over 7 acres and partially wooded. It appears to have been farmed with beans and corn over the years. The road feels so much like Indiana, so much like home.
So we bought it. Not without a lot of drama, and uncertainty of course. Nothing is ever easy. Well, except the sale of our house. That was a breeze! But after two and a half months of waiting - the land is ours! We finally own a piece of the country life!
Now that you’re up to speed with that fast forwarded 15 year edition of our lives, I hope you’ll follow along as we start our little homestead. The ups. The downs. There will be
plenty of both I’m sure.
First on the agenda is land clearing and getting the financing wrapped up for the construction build.
There’s so much to do and we can’t wait to get started!
